The run up to Halloween, for those that celebrate it, is a time to experiment and showcase your creative Halloween makeup skills.

Every year we make plans to somehow pull off a very elaborate costume - for example, this year I plan on going as Voldemort.. with the intention of sourcing some latex, a cloak and a swim cap. But we all know that these elaborate plans will, nine times out of ten, fail horrifically.

During the month of October, everyone seems to be in a Halloween frenzy - pumpkins are out on doorsteps a week in advance, shops are selling out of decorations and sweets earlier every year, and brands are even launching Halloween makeup products in celebration of the night of undead. We’re all so excited! [Read more: 4 Stunning Halloween Inspired Highlighters]

Creating the perfect look can be difficult and many of us get it completely wrong and, as luck is never in our favour, it's usually right at the last second. Not ideal. With only a few days to go, surely you’ve had your costume all sorted and ready for weeks, right? If this isn’t the case and you're in a panic to find last minute Halloween makeup ideas, we've found 5 incredibly quick and simple makeup looks that have become our fail-safe backups every year.

Harley Quinn

Nikkie from NikkieTutorials is our current favourite for her incredible Halloween makeup looks. She’s Flawless! With the fairly recent release of Suicide Squad back in August, it’s fair to say we know who the vast majority of females will be dressing up as this year.

You can recreate this Harley Quinn makeup look with a few simple products; the shades Pink and Orchid from the Makeup Revolution Eyes Like Angels Palette for the bold eyeshadow, Sleek Matte Me Lipstick in Rioja Red for the bright lips and Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner in Black for the facial tattoos. To complete the look, use Pixie Lott Paint Wash Out Hair Colour in Sorbet and Hawaii to get those iconic pink and blue dip dye pigtails.

Porcelain Doll

Using the everyday items from your makeup bag, you can create this super easy cracked doll Halloween makeup look in minutes! All you need is a foundation several shades lighter than your skin tone, such as one from the NARS Luminous Weightless Foundation range, some Stila Sheer Pressed Powder for that matte, powdery finish and finally some Matrix Sugarshine Conditioner to keep your hair glossy and shiny like a doll. Finish the Halloween makeup look with Illamasqua Slick Stick Eyeliner to draw the delicate cracks.

Colourful Clown

Everyone’s got some white face paint knocking around in their storage cupboards... Right? This colourful clown look is really simple and can take as little as 15 minutes to recreate - perfect for those leaving things to the last minute. To create that bold eye look, you’ll first need Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eye Primer and a white eyeshadow as a base to really make those colours stand out. Use a variety of bold eyeshadows for the eyes, we recommend using pink, orange, purple and peach.

To finish off the look, line your eyes with Rimmel Black Gel Liner and backcomb volume into your hair using Philip B Russian Amber Imperial Insta-Thick Hairspray to keep your ‘do in place.

Ventriloquist’s Doll

Another really easy Halloween makeup idea to keep as a last-minute back up plan. With bold blushed cheeks and widened eyes, it’s easy to create this simple doll look in mere minutes!

Try using Givenchy Vinyl Collection Blush in Memoire de Forme for the bright pink cheeks and MUA Snow White Intense Colour Eyeliner Pencil for the waterline, giving that wide-eyed doll-like appearance. Finish with some false eyelashes and freckles and you’re set. 10 minutes before the party and you don’t know what to go as? No problem!

Lioness

One of my favourite go-to Halloween makeup looks to try last-minute has to be some form of wild cat. Leopard, tiger, they’re all fun to do and take no time at all. However a lioness is by far the easiest and quickest to do.

Simply backcomb your hair, using Alterna Caviar Thick & Full Volume Hair Mousse to create the mane, a matte Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Black Eyeliner for the cat eyes, nose and lips, and finish the look with some beautiful Dolce & Gabbana The Animalier Bronzing Powder, which fits so perfectly, with its bold animal print design - a must have for this costume.

Do you have any elaborate plans for your costume makeup this Halloween, or will you keep it plain and simple? Remember, if all else fails, one of these quick and easy Halloween makeup looks could be a last-minute dream come true.
