For women with darker skin tones finding the right makeup can be a real struggle. Often your favourite brands don’t have the range of shades you need, or there are sooo many shades you just don't know where to start. Too light and you run the risk of looking ill, too dark and you look muddy. Concealers in particular are tricky little numbers as dark circles on dark skin, tonal nightmare! What do you need to counterbalance it? Here’s where we can help. Fresh from a makeup course, specialising in dark skin we are more than happy to share our findings to help you get rid of blemishes, scars and dark under eye circles no matter what your skintone is.
**1. Know Your Undertone **
To find a concealer than can not only get rid of dark under eye circles but on your entire face too. You need to know what the undertones of your face are in order to match the shade. And the easiest way to find out is to look at the color of the veins on the inside of your wrist. If your veins appear blue/purple you are in the cool-toned (bluish) skin tone spectrum, you should look for look for concealers with a neutral base. If your veins look more green, then you are in the warm-toned (yellow) skin tone spectrum, and should choose a concealer with a golden or orange base. If your skintone is darker and deeper then look for concealers with an orange/red base. Test the color out on your inner wrist, to check which shade suits your complexion the most.
2. Get an Eyecream
When choosing a concealer to get rid of those dark under eye circles a great trick is to apply an eye cream first. This not only hydrates the eye area but also helps concealer glide on smoothly and less cake-y. Many darker skinned women have oilier skin, so keep it hydrating but not greasy with Ren Vita Mineral Active 7 Eye Gel.
3. Foundation always comes first
If you put concealer on followed by foundation you will just end up moving the concealer around, uncovering those dark circles or blemishes and and you having to use up even more concealer putting it back on again to get rid of them. Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation provides medium coverage and a great selection of shades for darker skin tones.
4. Tap Don’t Rub
When applying concealer, especially to get rid of dark under eye circles, make sure you tap it into your skin. If you rub it instead you can not only damage the delicate eye area but also accidentally remove the product with your fingers. (and expensive habit!).
**5. Puffy Under-Eyes Require A Darker Shade **
If you have puffy under eyes rather than dark circles you actually need to wear a darker shade rather than a brightening concealer. This works much the same way as popping on that trusty black dress when you feel a bit bloated, and voila instantly slimline! The same trick works for the eyes. Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Serious Concealer does both cool and warm shades for darker skins and has serious staying power.
