Do You Really Have The Skin Type You Think You Do?

Just because you have a patch of dry skin on your face, doesn’t automatically mean you have dry skin. You may have had dry skin once, or your cleansers may be too harsh but it doesn't automatically mean you have that dry facial skin type for the rest of your life. Just like our fluctuating bra sizes, our skin can fluctuate too.

Skin especially can change due to a number of reasons from hormones, stress, climate, medication, diet, smoking, lack of sleep, humidity…you get the picture, I won't go on.

Our skin is a living organ, and many people say eyes are the window to the soul, however I think the state of your skin is a much better indicator of what’s really going on. Stress can manifest in dull, dry, ashy skin, lack of sleep can lead to fine lines and wrinkles, hormonal changes can leave your skin oily and blemish prone and an increase in temperature can leave your pores clogged.

Which is why it’s a good idea to check in with your skin, take a long look at any niggles, problems or even when it’s looking it’s best. Have you been having regular facials, getting more sleep, started yoga or changed your diet? If so keep it up! When you get into a habit of noticing these changes to your skin from whether your skin is looking dry or if it has more blemished than usual. Then you can ensure you are using the right products and giving your skin the nourishment it needs to keep it looking at optimum health.

If your skin feels tight after washing and your find you get flaky, dry skin on your face then you need to start using a richer formula moisturiser to combat the dryness.

If your skin is very sensitive and reacts to most products you put on it, go for a light cream or gel with limited ingredients to sooth and keep it calm.

If your skin is prone to breakouts, keep your pores clear with regular masks and a mattifying skincare range.

Whatever your skin type is, evolve with it. Adapt with changes to your lifestyle and climate, instinctively and meet its needs first. For example, if you're going away on holiday make sure to pack a soothing and hydrating moisturiser for post sun exposure. Or if you know you suffer from hormonal breakouts, make sure to do a face-mask the week before you feel PMS looming.
