How To Choose The Right SPF Number This Summer
Posted by Nitya Uppal in Body, Skin Care
After what felt like forever, we’re finally done with the dreaded winter season and we're now waiting to start enjoying the summer sun. Spending hours laying out in parks or planning weekends to hit the closest beach town, it’s that time of the year again! But with all the joys of this season comes the probing question - how should we protect our skin from the harsh sun rays without comprising our coveted tans? You’re not the only one who gets confused by the vast number of SPF choices available. So before you decide to pick up sun protection for summer 2016, here we have top skin care tips and an explanation to which number scale SPF you should be using this summer.
As many of you may already know, SPF stands for sun protection factor. This number does not determine the number of hours you can spend out in the sun without reapplying the cream, it simply refers to the amount of UVB protection it offers. To read product labels better keep in mind that sunscreens with SPF 15 helps filter 93 percent of UVB rays, SPF 30 filters 97 percent, SPF 50 blocks 98 percent, and SPF 100 blocks 99 percent of UVB rays. If you have fair skin that tends to burn easily you should pick up a higher SPF bottle. La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen £27.49 is a lightweight cream that provides an advanced 60 SPF to your skin. It contains a combination of UVA/UVB filters to offer broad-spectrum protection that lasts for eighty minutes. If you’re spending an entire day in the sun then don't forget to treat your sensitive skin to a cooling after-sun gel that will soothe it. The best product for that is Calypso’s After Sun Aloe Vera Gel £2.99, as it contains aloe vera and witch hazel which are known for their natural moisturising and healing abilities. On application, you will immediately feel the cooling effect and your skin will be noticeably softer and smoother, helping you prolong your tan.
If you’re an active person who enjoys swimming or even sweating in the sun then never leave home without generously applying on a water-proof sunblock. But sweltering hot summer weather is not the only time you need to give your skin protection. On higher altitudes use Lancaster’s Sun Sport Ski Wind & Cold Protection Cream & Stick £13.50 as it provides a high 50 SPF. This product boasts a snow and cold climate-resistant formula that offers broad UVB, UVA and IR protection from sun, wind and the cold.
If you're thinking about adding protection to your everyday makeup routine then a light 15 SPF formula will do. So before applying your foundation or starting with your beauty ritual, use Laura Mercier’s Moisture Crème £43.00 as its containing SPF 15 and vitamin E protect the skin from environmental factors that cause sun damage, while allantoin soothes and softens for a silky smooth complexion. It’s the perfect base for make-up to glide on top of!
To inculcate SPF into our daily habits we try and buy all cream-based products (night cream, foundations, concealers) carrying a certain amount of SPF. Many top skin care products claim that they provide an 8-hour, one-application worthy sun protection. Reapplying SPF through the day may be a tedious task, but it isn't an optional habit, even for water-resistant formulas. This summer use our top skin care tips and tricks for a happy, healthy and most importantly, gorgeously bronzed tanned skin.
