Looking Good Without Makeup Is Harder Than You Think

That #nomakeup selfie hashtag has been floating around, with gorgeous model-like angular jaws, plump pouts and a-mazing skin attached. It kills me. They look effortlessly good, with nothing but lip balm or moisturiser on to hide any dry skin on their face. Life is so unfair.
What you didn’t actually know, is to get a selfie that good is harder to achieve than you’d think. These gorgeous goddesses aren’t all naturally blessed with good skin, and well... some filters are likely involved (you know which one I’m on about...) so you can breathe a little sigh of relief here in the knowledge that they’ve worked incredibly hard to get their skin to that point. Just like we praise those utterly jaw-dropping makeup artists who take hours to perfect that winged eye and that ombre lip, those confident few posting #nomakeup selfies should be celebrated equally, as that result takes prep, serious prep.
Some women just want to embrace their natural beauty and stop hiding behind makeup. Alicia Keys recently wrote how she was sick of “how much women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect” and explains she’s doing it “ cause I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.” She has since been donning the #nomakeup look to various a-list events and standing proud. But.. she looks incredible - not how I would look if I took my makeup off right here, right now shudders at the thought. The dry skin on my face and occasional forehead spot just ruins everything.
Kim K has even picked up on the trend at the Givenchy SS17 show. Lord, give me skin like this please! I’d love to have the confidence to ‘bare all’ and leave the house makeup free, but according to Keyes’ makeup artist, it’s actually taken a lot of work to achieve skin this good.
Getting your skincare on point is key to achieving perfect skin (obviously) and making sure you’re eating the right foods, drinking enough water, yadda yadda yadda. But just how long do you have to keep this up? And how much products are we talking here?

Using Ice can be an effective way to tighten pores, reduce wrinkles and brighten skin. Rubbing an ice cube over your face in the morning and evenings after cleansing will do wonders to your skin.

Facial oils are good for adding extra, natural oils to the face, neck and decolletage to make the skin luminous and radiant. Ditch your tubs and tubes of moisturiser and opt instead for a glass bottle and pipette. Even if you have oily skin, facial oils like Emma Hardie EH Brilliance Face Oil and Antipodes Organic Avocado Oil and Rosehip Divine Face Oil are excellent for balancing the pH and naturally occurring oils on the face as well as stimulate cell repair and eliminate wrinkles and dark spots.
Cucumber is another great (but cliché) beauty hack to get rid of under eye bags and illuminate skin. Grate half a cucumber and spread the pulp around the eye area, taking care not to go out of the eye sockets or too far down the cheek. This is an amazing 5 minute relaxing face treatment you can do at home so easily. If you have a little extra time, you can spread this across your whole face until it draws all the heat out of the skin and bring blood to the surface, as cucumber is an excellent cooling agent. Face masks like this Yes To Cucumbers Calming Face Mask is great for that 30 minute unwind after a long day and will help hydrate and smooth any dry skin on your face.
Now, don’t be shocked… but the best #nomakeup tip… is makeup! Very thin, barely there makeup is essential to achieving that beautiful natural glow. Fill in your brows with Nudestix Eyebrow Stylus Pen and Gel and brighten eyes with the white end of the Bourjois Noir et Blanc Eyeliner on the waterline. NARS Applicators Eyelash Curler is also an essential to get those wide-awake eyes without a lick of mascara. Biotherm Aquasource BB Cream is also great for evening the skin tone with a thin veil of colour without clogging pores or looking unnatural.
