What Is Microdermabrasion And How Does It Work?

Microdermabrasion has definitely been the ‘it’ treatment of 2018. Everyone from Suki Waterhouse to Paris Hilton is at it. So they must be good, right?

For anyone that isn’t familiar with Microdermabrasion facials it’s a cosmetic procedure that uses fine crystals and a vacuum to remove dead skin cells from the face. The aim is to reduce the effect of fine lines, skin blemishes, redness and hyperpigmentation. You can see a difference after one treatment however it’s advised that you have it done at least once a month to reek the full benefits.

I was invited by Blush + Blow to try it out for myself at their adorable Parsons Green salon. I was curious to see how Microdermabrasion could help my skin, especially now the cold weather is here to stay. My skin isn’t in awful shape but it could definitely do with improving in some areas (pigmentation, oily skin with dry patches, redness).

The salon was beautifully decorated and extremely welcoming. I was invited to fill in a client form detailing my medical history, skin history and my main skin concerns. I was then taken downstairs to a private room by my skin specialist and she proceeded to tell me more about Microdermabrasion and its benefits.

She asked me to explain a little more about my skin and what I’d like to achieve with Microdermabrasion. After taking a close, detailed look at my skin she recommended I have a crystal tip Microdermabrasion paired with a hydration treatment. Even though I have oily skin she told me that a lot of oily skin sufferers actually have dehydrated skin, and the oil is the result of the skin trying to self hydrate.

After the Qs and As were over the treatment began. My skin was thoroughly cleansed, exfoliated and massaged using a warm cloth to help open up my pores. She then started with the Microdermabrasion itself. It wasn’t painful however on the more sensitive parts of my face, like around my mouth, it did feel a bit scratchy.

My skin specialist worked her way round my face, concentrating on the more congested parts such as my chin and nose, until she was happy that every bit of dirt and dead skin had been irradiated.

Once the Microdermabrasion was complete she again cleansed my face with a warm cloth and massaged in various Vitamin C serums and creams to help put the moisture back into my skin. Then a thick, hydrating mask was applied and left to settle in for 10 minutes. Meanwhile I received a lovely hand and arm massage where she focused her attention on all the key pressure points. The mask was then washed off and a final moisturiser was applied to finish off the treatment.

Microdermabrasion facials have no downtime, which is why so many people love them as they can be fitted into a lunch break, however there are some aftercare instructions that need to be followed. It’s extremely important to apply a sunscreen every morning for at least 5 days after the treatment as your skin will be very susceptible to sun damage. You also shouldn’t use any acid based skin care products for a few days as this will irritate the skin. And finally, no vigorous exercise for 24 hours - I think that one I can manage!

Immediately after my treatment I was a little red but I was shocked at how clean and clear the pores around my nose and cheeks were. The texture and discolouration from my freckles also seemed to have reduced. My skin felt extremely soft to the touch and looked very fresh.

In the days after my Microdermabrasion facial my skin was glowing! It was so soft and my makeup applied flawlessly as all of my skin's surface texture had gone. I was so impressed by the results I achieved from just one session of Microdermabrasion that I’m going to keep it up and go once a month!
