Spring Skin - Top Beauty And Makeup Tips From Our Expert

When the days get brighter and the weather starts to get warmer, it's time to get your skin looking the best it possibly can, so that you can wear lighter, fresher makeup formulas. As we all know, bright sunlight isn't the most flattering of light, so if you want to look your best & look fresh, healthy and glowing (so you can wear lighter foundations), here are some of my tips:
Let's start at the cornerstone of all good skincare which is cleansing. Forget face wipes - it has to be a cleanser and I recommend double cleansing (especially at night). By double cleansing, I mean using the first cleanser to remove any makeup and then a second cleanser which will totally remove any leftover makeup/ grease/ pollution/ excess oil. There is an amazing new product on the market which is perfect for all skin types, created by skincare guru Caroline Hirons (for Pixi), which is the Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Solid Cleansing Oil and Cleansing Cream forget having to search for different cleansers - this one product makes it easy and is really, really good. I also have to give a 'shout out' to one of my own favourite balm cleansers of all time which is the Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm which makes cleansing a joy.

Next is exfoliation. I'm a HUGE fan of exfoliating the skin - especially as we age, we really need to help our skin slough off the dead skin cells. By doing this, your skin will look so much brighter and clearer. You can spend a fortune on amazing skincare, but if you are applying all of your gorgeous skincare products to your face every day and you are not exfoliating, your products are going to sit on dead skin cells and won't penetrate the skin as well (which is wasting your money). Exfoliate regularly and all of the products you apply after will be SO much more effective. Some people love a manual scrub with granules, others prefer to use an acid toner overnight (I personally love both) to help your skin exfoliate itself - we're all different and you need to find what works best for you. All skins benefit from exfoliation, you just have to make sure that you do your research and find out which ones are best for YOUR skin type (which My Beauty Matches will help you find).
If you like a manual exfoliator, a couple of my favourites are the Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant and the Murad Skin Smoothing Polish. For toners which will exfoliate the face (with no manual scrubbing of the face), Alpha H Liquid Gold is a good place to start and if you want something that is stronger than this, I adore the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Pads.
Please note - you should ensure that you are wearing a daily SPF (especially in the Spring/ Summer months) - but even more so when you are exfoliating as this will make the skin even more sensitive to the sun. Don't think that sunscreens have to be thick and heavy for the face - technology and formulations really have improved over the years and there really are some amazing face sunscreens that will protect your face from sun damage (which is the biggest cause of wrinkles and sunspots). Do check out Ultrasun which is an once a day application and they do some amazing moisturising face SPF's that have anti-wrinkle and anti pigmentation ingredients. Wearing SPF is the single biggest step you can take to prevent your skin from ageing prematurely and don't forget the neck and decollate too.

When it comes to spring makeup, the biggest change you can make is to change your foundation. Ditch the heavy 'this will cover everything' winter foundations and look for a gorgeous, light base (foundation/ tinted moisturiser) to even out your skin tone and then go in with a concealer for under the eyes and then cover any blemishes/ redness/ broken veins. These days we are really spoilt for choice when it comes to lighter bases - nearly every cosmetic brand makes lighter formulations, it's just about making sure that the one you select is suited to your skin type. A few of my favourite lighter bases for Spring are the BECCA Aqua Luminous Foundation (they also do a great AQUA Perfecting Concealer) and the Resultime by Collin Paris Multi-Corrective CC Cream.
Compliment your lighter foundation base with pretty cream blushers, tinted lip balms and cream based eyeshadows for a gorgeous, fresh spring look.
