This week we were lucky enough to chat to the award winning hairdresser to the A-list, Jason Collier. The most charismatic (not to mention talented) award-winning hair colourist and stylist, who can count A-Listers including; Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria, Justin Timberlake, Damian Lewis and Sienna Miller amongst his clients and friends.
Despite being on the speed dial to the A-list, he found a few minutes to give some top tips on how to wear your hair this winter. The universally flattering Lob. and here’s what he says:
1. What is the must have haircut this season?
If you’re looking for a fresh new style to take through the new season, why not take inspiration from the chicest of celebrities? The hottest names in Hollywood are all changing up their looks ready for the autumn, including supermodel-turned-actress Cara Delevingne, who’s recently switched her trademark long locks for a cool long bob – better known as ‘the lob’. Always chic and so easy to wear, this super-flattering style has already cemented its place as an A-list favourite. Luckily it’s easy to steal that celebrity style, with the right products and the correct care of course!
2. What if it doesn't suit me?
Going for the chop is always a bold move, but luckily the lob works on everyone – on all hair types, textures and colours, at any age and most face shapes too. Anyone who’s anyone has sported this cute and versatile look at some stage over the last few years and it’s easy to see why. The lob is a modern, fresh and young cut – it’s easier to manage and maintain than longer hair, and much more feminine and fun to play around with than a shorter style. I love the lob!
3. How should I Style it?
Wear your lob sleek and straight in a centre parting for an elegant, grown-up look, or try it pulled back into a sophisticated chignon or ponytail – the best bit about having a lob is its versatility! A must-have for these sleek styles is a serum to boost shine and tame any frizzies; I love Pureology Smooth Perfection Smoothing Serum for a glossy finish.
Don’t be afraid to wear your lob a little messy for a sexy, undone vibe either – you can afford to play with texture and style with this look too. I love using a salt spray for a loosely tousled finish, try Label.M’s Sea Salt Spray for an edgy take on your classic lob. That slightly gritty, matte texture is perfect for creating an effortless bedhead style! Take inspiration from January Jones, Jourdan Dunn and Lily-Rose Depp to see how they’ve been wearing their beachy waves.
My personal favourite way to wear the lob is to have the cut slightly shorter at the back than at the front, and in a flirty side parting. Ask your stylist for a ‘layered lob’, and to line up your parting where the arch of your brow begins, for a sassy look that will flatter your features and enhance your face.
You can style the lob in face-framing waves, 50s movie-star style like Lauren Bacall – just make sure hair is in optimum condition to achieve this classical look, with regular use of masks and treatments, like the Shiseido Sleekliner Mask which is great for controlling flaways without weighing the hair down. And don’t forget, you’ll still be able to create edgy looks like quiffs, slicked-back styles and retro back-combed styles with your lob – it really is one of the most versatile cuts you can have!
