With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there is no better time to treat that dry skin on your face and start stepping up your skincare routine and ensuring that you look picture-perfect for the most romantic night of the year. In my opinion, a great skincare system should be in place all year round, but of course there are tips and tricks to step things up in times of need! If you’re finding that your complexion isn’t looking as rosy and radiant as you’d hoped, follow my skincare secrets to get back the glow, whatever the issue!

Drink More Water!

You may think that you’re drinking enough water, but studies have shown that around two-thirds of us aren’t taking in enough on a daily basis. I can always tell when a client walks through the door if they’re drinking enough water or not – it really does make that much of a difference to your skin. Buy a beautiful stainless-steel water bottle and keep it topped up on your desk every day – you’ll notice the change almost immediately. Skin will look clearer and brighter, blemishes will reduce substantially and those crepey fine lines around the eyes will fill out too; you’ll be boasting all-round youthful skin that will glow with health and have your date falling head over heels.

Dry Skin

During the winter, many of us can suffer from especially dry skin on the face, even if it’s never usually an issue. Dry patches and flakes aren’t pleasant and can affect everything from the way your makeup sits to how you feel about yourself – not ideal for date night, when you want to be feeling your most beautiful! Remember that dry skin is lacking in oil, so it needs its barrier function reinforced to get it back to its radiant best.

I recommend cleansing with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, used in conjunction with Skinsorials Double Cleansing Brush, to gently lift any flakes and buff away dryness, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion underneath.

Post-cleanse, massage in an intense facial oil such as Balance Me Rose Otto Face Oil, to really hydrate the skin and its deeper layers, and be sure to really massage this in for optimum results. My own massage technique uses the pads of the fingertips in delicate areas, and the knuckles along the jawbone and down the sides of the nose to create natural contours.

Adding in a rich facial cream afterwards will help to plump up the skin and get you looking radiant ready for the big night! I love to use Jurlique’s Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream, as it deeply hydrates the skin and uses lots of hero ingredients – plus the fragrance is truly gorgeous.

No-Breakout Zone

If the worst has happened and you’ve woken up with a blotchy red breakout, don’t panic. With the right skincare and the correct techniques, you can ensure that your skin will be calm and clear by dinner-time. It’s all about choosing the right products and treating the skin with proper care and attention.

Use a balancing cleanser, like BareMinerals Blemish Remedy Acne Treatment Gelee Cleanser, and a zinc-based toner such as La Roche Posay’s SeroZinc, to gently remove excess oil, target existing blemishes and calm any angry redness. Your skin may feel sensitive, but exfoliation is a key step to reduce future breakouts and rid the skin of any lurking bacteria. I much prefer a chemical exfoliant to a scrub formula on oily skin, to clear out sebum and cleanse in a gentler way. Try Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, swept over the skin for instant glow and a calmer complexion.

To treat any pesky blemishes, opt for a product packed with salicylic acid as this will aid the longer-term health of your skin, as well as improving its appearance in the short term. A product such as Origins’ Super Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel will help to treat the blemish, as well as reduce its size and darkness – just in time for date night! And the final step is hydration – because even oily skin needs a dose of moisture. Try a light oil-free formula such as La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Mat Moisturiser, which will reduce both excess sebum and excess shine, for a velvety matte finish.

Chapped Lips

Valentine’s Day is for kissing – so if you’ve got a poorly pout you’ll want to make sure it’s back in perfect condition. If like the dry skin on your face, your lips are dry and flaky, I would gently buff them using a warm flannel, and follow up with a good slick of By Terry Baume de Rose Nutri Couleur Ultra-Hydrating Balm, which soothes and softens like no other, it’s so luxurious. Then throughout the day and night, you can top up with Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, which I adore for on-the-go lip care, and for colour, try Pixi’s Tinted Brilliance Balm sticks, which give a lovely, sheer wash of colour but are super moisturising too.

So pucker up and enjoy your Valentine’s Day – with your best-ever skin!
