As a professional makeup artist I’ve learnt a few tricks of the trade over the years which have helped to strengthen my skills and prolong the finishing touches to my makeup.

Here are 7 tips and tricks to make your makeup go that extra mile - thank me later.

Which Steps Should I Take To Prep My Skin Before Applying Makeup?

Preparing the skin is my number 1 rule to securing a beautiful long lasting makeup base. I would always recommend cleansing the skin thoroughly before massaging in a few drops of facial oil for up to 10 minutes whilst avoiding the eye area, this really helps to wake up the skin and keep it looking radiant.

How Much Moisturiser Should I Use Before Applying Makeup?

After prepping the skin I then like to follow up with a hydrating eye cream however the key to this step is less is more. Make sure you don’t flood the skin with moisturiser, as this may affect your makeup base, use a tissue to wipe of any excess moisturiser that's sitting heavily on the skin.

How Can I Encourage My Lipstick To Last Longer?

Using a lip scrub to get rid of dead skin cells will help your lipstick last longer, I absolutely love MAC's Lip Scrubtious in Sweet Brown Sugar, $17.50 which helps to leave my lips feeling super soft.

How Can I Keep My Brows Looking Their Best?

It’s easy to get carried away with over plucking your eyebrows but my advice would be to just keep your brows in their natural shape, use an eyebrow brush to groom your brows daily and keep them looking precise. Burberry also do some great eyebrow pencils that are really easy to use and have a natural formula to gently fill in any sparse areas, I like to use their Effortless Brow Definer, $33 followed by Chanel’s Longwear Eyebrow Gel $32 which helps to set the brow.

How Much Of A Difference Do Eyelash Curlers Actually Make?

Even if you aren’t wearing mascara, I would say to always curl your lashes as it helps to open up the eyes. MAC's Full Lash Curler, $22 play a huge part in my makeup routine.

Which Order Should I Contour In?

Whilst a lot of people tend to contour after they’ve applied their foundation I would say it's better to contour before applying foundation for a more natural finish. Burberry's Face Contour Pen, $37 is perfect for this and it's also really easy to use. Apply your concealer and then add foundation where needed afterwards, this will make your makeup easier to manage.

How Can I Make My Eye Shadow Go Further?

For a long lasting and stronger eye look use a combination of a cream eye shadow and a powder eye shadow. Put the cream on first as a base blend well then follow with a powder eye shadow. The look will be stronger and it’s much easier to blend.
